Just to update a post from last night, Skip Edwards has indeed been named the new head football coach at St. John Vianney. He still teaches at Holmdel but does the announcing and works the clock at SJV home basketball games and was formerly a football assistant for the Lancers at the beginning of his career. Edwards stepped down after a 2-8 season at Lakewood after the 2007 season, his 21st season as a head coach after earlier stints at Holmdel and Hightstown. He made Hightstown into a playoff team that ended up losing to Red Bank Regional in the playoffs in the earlier part of the decade in Hightstown’s first playoff game since the legendary 46-44 state sectional final loss to RBR in 1975 and reached a state sectional final with Holmdel in the 1988. As stated in last night’s post, he also is a long-time friend of SJV athletic director Ken Szyarto, which made him a comfortable fit.
The Lancers are 40-60 in the last 10 years and went 22-38 during the six-year tenure of legendary Shore Conference coach John Amabile, who stepped down after this past season. They lost a big chunk of their backfield from last season as senior standout Chris Mayo will be graduating and sophomore Charles Davis has transferred to Neptune. There are also rumors that freshman standout linebacker/running back Jazzmar Clax could wind up at his hometown school of Freehold as well, so Edwards may be starting relatively anew.
