On a quick baseball note, the American Legion All-Star game pitting Monmouth County vs. Ocean County will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 3 p.m. at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood. There also will be a showcase for scouts and college coaches at 1:30 p.m. in which players are put through individual drills. It’s a place to go check out some of the up-and-coming players in the Shore Conference, so stop by if you get a chance.
Before I get to the football stuff, got some info from coach Ed Jones and how Middletown North’s girls hoops squad did this summer, and for any other boys or girls basketball teams out there, feel free to e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org with any offseason news on how things went this summer. The Lions went 3-5 at the recent team camp at Red Bank Regional, including two losses to Marlboro and Brick Memorial by a total of eight points, and they return eight of their 10 players from last season’s team. The Lions’ top player from last year, Shannon Norton, is continuing her career at Suffolk University in Boston.
Also, in reference to a previous post that mentioned that Adam Skidmore might be the first Division I-A football recruit in Central history, a reader commented that John Kilmurray played at Central and went on to play at Florida State. Looking it up, Kilmurray was a fullback/tight end who played for the Seminoles in the early 1970s after graduating from Central in 1972, and he was one of two Central players on that Florida State team, as Kilmurray’s teammate, quarterback Robbie Keyes, also played for the Seminoles at the same time. So Skidmore is the first Division I-A recruit at Central in 37 years, still a great accomplishment.
Now on to some quick alumni news:
—Donald Brown (Red Bank Catholic) has made a solid impression in Colts camp thus far at running back.
—Knowshon Moreno (Middletown South) will get the start at running back in the Broncos’ crowded backfield for the preseason opener tonight.
—Kevin Malast (Manchester/Rutgers) is sitting at third on the depth chart so far at weakside linebacker for the Bears after being brought into camp as an undrafted free agent.
–Apparently JoePa is happy with how Penn State offensive lineman Lou Eliades (Ocean Twp.), a projected starter, progressed during the offseason.
–Tough preseason opener for Miles Austin (Monmouth University) in the race to fill T.O.’s vacant starting wide receiver spot on the Cowboys.
–Defensive lineman and senior tri-captain Andrew Poulson (Middletown South) is giving an inside look at the Lafayette season this year. Mentioned in his first post is fellow defensive lineman Mike Grimaldi (St. John Vianney), and one of the incoming defensive linemen for the Leopards is Ricky Lyster (Ocean Twp.).
That will do it for now, as I am off to celebrate Miss All Shore Media’s birthday. She continues to keep turning 29.
